Event Details

Explore creative photographic techniques & abstraction in this hybrid workshop.

When can a blurry photo be great?

When you create blur by intentionally moving your camera, lens, or both during a long exposure. ICM, Intentional Camera Movement, embraces the power of play, flexes creative muscles, and can result in fascinating impressionistic images.

Join Bellevue-based travel photographers John and Lisa Merrill for a 3-part online and in-person workshop exploring ICM photography. They’ll help you learn “panning” to freeze a moving subject against a blurred background – a great technique for wildlife, sports, outdoor recreation, and transportation.

You’ll also learn to add blur to your photos of still subjects by shaking, twisting, and/or zooming during long exposures.

This workshop starts with an online presentation, on February 3rd, in which John and Lisa share their favorite ICM tips and techniques with example images created in the Pacific Northwest and around the world.

The second part includes an in-person photowalk at Seattle Center on February 6th, where you’ll apply what you learned and expand your visual toolbox.

Hands-on photo coaching can be transformative. With John and Lisa's tips and encouragement, you’ll dive deeper into the playful and powerful world of creative blur.

The third session, on February 13th, will be an online image review and discussion. The group will reconvene via Zoom to show ICM images and give and get supportive feedback. The photo review is a fun opportunity to be inspired by what others created at the same location, and continue your growth as a photographer.
