The Story:

Emerald City Music kicks off SEASON 04 with a bold series of local and national collaborations. The night begins with a world-premiere by local Seattle-based composer Angelique Poteat. Her work for clarinet, trombone, violin, double bass, and percussion – to be paired with dance – programmatically follows the story of women’s battle to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces, overcome stereotypes and avoid harassment. Poteat captures the real-life stories of women who have come out to share their stories of their struggles to be treated as equal soldiers to their male counterparts. Following, the powerhouse team of director Michael Barrett, librettist Mark Campbell, and choreographer Josh Bergasse, unveils a collaboration between ECM and the Moab Music Festival that reimagines Igor Stravinsky’s iconically complex  “The Soldier’s Tale”. The piece for dancer and musicians – premiered in September 1918 – tells the story of a soldier on leave who trades his magic fiddle to the devil, launching a bizarre and entertaining sequence of events.
