Event Details

Black women played a crucial role in the fight for women’s suffrage despite active exclusion from the movement by white suffragists. A century after the 19th Amendment passed, barriers to voting and political involvement continue.

Join MOHAI and hear from black women tackling this systemic discrimination through political leadership along with youth activists organizing regional civic education. Speakers include Gonzaga University historian Quin’Nita Cobbins-Modica, Seattle Civic Poet Jourdan Keith, Mayor of Tacoma Victoria Woodards, and members of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Youth Ambassadors.

Presented in partnership with the Black Heritage Society of Washington State (BHS).

American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters will be present for this event.

For disability accommodations, please contact programs@mohai.org two weeks prior to the event.
